Dr. Zhao is clinician scientist at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, USA, with the dual academic rank of Professor of Orthopedics, Mayo Medical School, and Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Mayo Graduate School. He practiced orthopedic surgery for 15 years after graduating from Tianjin Medical College in 1982. From 1994-1997, he served as vice chair for the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Tianjin Red Cross Hospital. In 1997, he received a fellowship in the Biomechanics Laboratory in the Department of Orthopedic Surgeryat Mayo Clinicto pursue his orthopedic research career. After three years of postdoctoral training in orthopedic biomechanics, he joined Mayo Clinic.His research interests include spine surgery and biomechanics, soft tissue injury, tissue engineering, and medical imaging. He has published over 250 papers in peer reviewed journals and several book chapters. He holds several US patents. Currently, He is a Principal Investigator or Co-investigator on three NIH R01 grants. He is also very active in the professional society including serving the Topic Chair, member of Nominating Committee, and Clinical Research Committee in the Orthopedic Search Society, andactive member of the ORS, AAOS, ASB, and ISB. Based on his 15 years of clinical practice and 17 years of orthopedic research, he as a wide knowledge and skill in both clinical and research.
